We love our sons
when they stumble awkwardly,
our sons who look up to us
wanting our unconditional love.
Sons depend on their fathers
even when that father is single
working two jobs to keep up.
A father who may also be his mom.
We love our sons,
so they can give fully of themselves,
to be compassionate and the caring ones.
We love our sons
not for their merits or awards,
but simply because if they fall,
they know to get up again.
Share with them your own missteps,
let them know the vulnerabilities
the things you’ve overcome.
We love our sons
because each new day is a gift.
Our sons need to hear the words
“We love them.”
Lastly,
we love our sons
truthful and unconditionally.
